Phase 1 of CU’s Williams Village expansion included a 6-story, 500-bed on-campus residence hall known as Will Vill North featuring semi-suites mixed in with traditional double and single student bedrooms.  The hall is supported by 8,000 sq. ft. of classrooms, computer labs, coffee shop, office space and faculty support space for two residential academic programs.  The building’s pinwheel plan creates three separate and distinct courtyards, designed as outdoor classrooms/social spaces using native landscape materials.  alm2s partnered with Mackey-Mitchell and Whiting-Turner Contracting to win this Design/Build competition.

A few years later, alm2s, in conjunction with KWK Architects and Whiting-Turner Contracting, was again selected by CU Boulder to continue Phase 2 of the expansion featuring a 7-story, Will Vill East residence hall housing 700 students in 20 communities of 35 beds each, with a study room and open lounge in each community.  Cascading rooflines and two separate wings break up the building’s large scale creating distinct neighborhoods within the hall. The open first floor includes most of the community spaces, multipurpose rooms, open student kitchen and open lounge/great room.

I don’t know exactly how you did it, but this very large building has a real homey feel to it within each individual living community….well done.
